Brown Fencing Opens Season at Big One with Three First Place Finishes

The fencing squads opened up competition for the 2009-2010 season at the Big One at Smith College on Saturday. Brown started off the season strong, winning three of six events on the day.

Mackiewicz to Receive NCAA Sportsmanship Award
The NCAA recently announced that Brown fencer Aleksandra Mackiewicz has been chosen from thousands of candidates around the country to receive the organization's annual Sportsmanship Award. The Award honors student-athletes who have demonstrated one or more of the ideals of sportsmanship, including fairness, civility, honesty, unselfishness, respect and responsibility, through their actions in the competitive arena of intercollegiate athletics. Recipients are chosen by the NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct.

Tass Takes Bronze at Veteran World Championships
Head fencing coach Atilio Tass turned in an impressive showing in Moscow last week, placing third in the Saber division of the Veterans World Championships. Tass, who was added to the squad at the last minute after initially being an alternate, pulled off an upset by going 6-2 in his bouts and advancing to the semifinals before losing to the eventual champion.

Tass to Compete at Veterans World Championships
Head fencing coach Atilio Tass will travel to Moscow this week to compete in the 2009 FIE Veterans World Championships. Tass qualified for the Men's Sabre 50-59 division by competing in three prerequisite events, and will have the chance to vie for a world championship in the division on Thursday.
