  • Brown Places 13th at NCAA Fencing Championships

    For the second-straight season the Brown fencing team finished 13th overall at the NCAA Division I Championship. The Bears were represented in every weapon at the 2012 tournament and sent a program-high six fencers to Ohio State. Brown was one of only nine schools in the country to have a fencer in all events.

Head coach Atilio Tass and the Bears look to improve on impressive 13th-place finish last season as the squad boasts a fencer in each of the six events at this year’s tournament.
  • Brown Sets New Program Record as Six Fencers Qualify For NCAA Division I Championship

    Last year Brown fencing set a new program high by sending five fencers to the NCAA Division I Championship. This year, the record has been topped once again, as six student-athletes are heading to the national tournament after their performances at the Regional Championships, hosted by Boston College on Sunday, March 11.
  • Six Brown Fencers Earn NFC Distinctions

    The Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) has announced their regular season awards and Brown has earned several honors including the a share of the women’s championship and combined team championship. Six fencers were named to the NFC All-Star teams, three first and three second teamers.
  • Brown Fencing Competes at Annual Squad Championships

    The Brown men’s & women’s teams were in action this weekend, taking on some of the top teams in the Northeast at the annual Squad Championships, hosted by NYU. The men’s squad finish 11th overall against 20 other teams, posting 75 team points. The women finished eighth amongst 21 other teams, totaling 77 points.
  • Weller, McGuire, Hawrot & Weiss Earn All-Ivy Honors at Round Robins

    Freshman Barrett Weiss (Barrington, R.I.) was named to the All-Ivy First Team thanks to his performance at the 2012 Ivy League Fencing Round Robins at Yale's Coxe Cage, while three other fencers earned second team honors: sophomore Kathryn Hawrot (Barrington, R.I.), junior Kelly McGuire (Park City, Utah) and junior Teddy Weller (Barrington, R.I.). As a team, the Brown men finished in a time for fifth place overall, while the women took a sixth place finish.
  • Brown Fencing Goes Undefeated at Eric Sollee Invitational

    The Brown fencing squad continued its impressive 2012, going undefeated at the Eric Solle Invitational, hosted by Brandeis. The Brown men’s & women’s teams defeated New York University, Johns Hopkins, Haverford and Hunter at the Grossman Center on Saturday.
  • Weiss Named CollegeFencing360 National Rookie of the Week

    CollegeFencing360 announced its national awards, and freshman foilist Barrett Weiss (Barrington, R.I.) was honored as one of the "Primetime Performers," being named the Rookie of the Week. Weiss helped spearhead a dominating showing at the NFC No. 2 at Boston College, as the Brown men's fencing team went undefeated.
  • Brown Fencing Goes 12-1 at NFC No. 2

    The Brown fencing team had one of the most impressive performances of any squad at the Northeast Fencing Conference meet number two, as the Bears went a combined 12-1, with the men posting an undefeated 6-0 mark. Bruno was victorious over Boston College, Dartmouth, Tufts, Brandeis, MIT and Vassar. The women’s squad went 6-1. The Brown men are 9-1 overall on the season, while the women are 6-1.
  • Brown Fencing Looks To Improve on Last Year’s NCAA Run

    After a promising fall season, the Brown fencing team has its sights set on the upcoming winter schedule and a return trip to the NCAA Championship. Last year, the Bears had one of the best seasons in program history, sending five competitors to the NCAA’s (all underclassman) and posted a 13th-place finish. Now, with all five fencers returning, Brown looks to put its stamp on collegiate fencing.
  • Brown Fencing Picks up Seven Wins at Brandeis Invitational

    The Brown men’s & women’s fencing teams were in action for the third time this season and the final time in 2011 on Sunday, taking part in the Brandeis Invitational. The Bears were victorious over Brandeis, Boston College and MIT on the men’s side, while the women went 4-1 in team competition, topping Brandies, BC, MIT and North Carolina.
  • Brown Primed for First Northeast Fencing Conference Tournament

    The Bears fencing squad heads to the University of New Hampshire this weekend for the first of the Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) two tournaments this season. The first event will start at 9 a.m. The Bears will face Boston University, UNH, Sacred Heart, Wellesley (women-only) and UMass.
  • Brown Fencing Goes 7-1 At First NFC Tournament

    The Brown men’s & women’s fencing teams were in action an the University of New Hampshire of the weekend, putting up impressive performances across the board. The women won each of their matches against BU, UNH, Sacred Heart, Wellesley and UMass, while the men were victorious against BU, UNH and UMass. The lone loss came on the men’s side in an extremely close defeat to SHU.
  • Brown Fencing Returns from Big One Event with 12 Medals

    The Brown fencing team was in action for the first time in the 2011-12 season on Saturday, taking on nine other programs at the annual NEIFC Fall Invitational, or “Big One”. The Bears came out on top in the medal total, taking home 12, including three gold in the six events that were held. MIT finished second with two golds, while Sacred Heart totaled 10 medals with one gold.
  • Brown Coach Atilio Tass Continues World Fencing Pedigree at 2011 Pan Am Games

    With the XVI Pan Am Games coming to a close on October 30, 2011, Brown fencing coach Atilio Tass can finally return state-side as the Bears look to improve upon at 13th-place finish at last year’s NCAA Division I Championship. Coach Tass has been in Guadalajara, Mexico all week at the annual spectacle, serving as the technical director on the bout committee for fencing.
