THIBODAUX, La. – Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, Wash.) pulled the Brown baseball team within one in the ninth inning, but the Bears were edged by Nicholls State, 4-3, in game two of the series Saturday at Ray E. Didier Field.
Nicholls State improves to 6-5 overall, while the Bears drop to 0-2 on the young season.
Junior Reid Anderson (Aledo, Texas) allowed four runs in six innings with six strikeouts in the loss. JJ Sliepka (Houston, Texas) and Calvin Farris (San Diego, Calif.) each provided one scoreless inning out of the bullpen. Alex Ernestine gave up one run in four innings of relief to earn the win for the Colonels.
Brown struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, as Rob Henry (Cranston, R.I.) led off with a single and then crossed the plate when Homza knocked a triple to right center. Huntley followed with a sacrifice fly to left for the 2-0 lead.
Nicholls evened the score in the bottom half of the frame when Gavin Wehby hit a two-run single through the right side. Wehby doubled in two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to push the Colonels in front, 4-2.
The Bears made it interesting in the top of the ninth as Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) and Brian Ginsberg (Los Angeles, Calif.) drew back-to-back two-out walks. Sluys drove home Ciufo with a single through the left side, but Adam Tarver came in to pick up the final out and earn the save.
Brown and Nicholls State will wrap up the final game of the series tomorrow at noon.
