Baseball Sweeps Cornell to Open Ivy Play

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Brown baseball team collected 18 combined hits as the Bears swept both ends of a doubleheader at Cornell, 8-1 and 7-4, to open the Ivy League season Saturday at Hoy Field.

Brown improves to 8-8 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League, while Cornell drops to 9-7 on the season.

Game 1 (Brown 8, Cornell 1)
Marc Sredojevic (Mendham, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with a home run, double, and three RBIs with two runs scored, while Sam Grigo (Westbrook, Conn.) also added a pair of hits and dove in two runs.

Christian Taugner (Roselle, Ill.) limited Cornell to just one run and three hits in the full seven innings to pick up his third win of the season. Tim Willittes allowed four earned runs in four innings pitched in the loss for the Big Red.

Brown went right to work with three runs in the top of the first, as Sredojevic hit an RBI double and Jake Rosander (Fullerton, Calif.) followed with a one-run single to center field. The Bears tacked on another run in the second when Brian Ginsberg (Los Angeles, Calif.) smacked a solo homer over the left field fence for the three-run advantage.

Cornell answered back with one run in the bottom of the second, but the Bears exploded for five runs on three hits and one error in the fourth, highlighted by Sredojevic's two-run home run. Grigo added a two-run single through the right side during the inning to give the visitors an 8-1 lead.

Taugner held the Big Red to just two hits over the final five innings, including a 1-2-3 seventh frame to secure the complete game victory.

Game 2 (Brown 7, Cornell 4)
Rob Henry (Cranston, R.I.) paced the Bears with three hits in the second game, adding two runs scored with a home run, while Josh Huntley (Aurora, Colo.) drove in three runs on two hits. Sredojevic also added two hits for four combined on the day.

Reid Anderson (Aledo, Texas) gave up three earned runs over 6.0 innings with four strikeouts for the win. JJ Sliepka (Houston, Texas) pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save of the season.

The Bears carried over their offense into the second game with three hits in the top of the first, scoring a pair of runs when Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) singled through the right side.

After Cornell responded with two runs in the bottom half to even the score, the Bears answered with a pair of tallies, starting when Willy Homza (Anchorage, Alaska) led off with a single. Homza crossed the plate later in the frame on a fielder's choice before Huntley followed with an RBI single up the middle.

From there, Cole Rutherford and Henry swapped solo home runs, keeping the Bears in front by two runs, 5-3. Cornell chipped away with one more run in the seventh to pull within one, but the Bears extended their lead with two runs on four hits in the top of the ninth, as Huntley hit a two-run double for the three-run lead.

Sliepka came in and pitched a hitless ninth frame to secure the save and Saturday sweep.

Brown will continue Ivy play tomorrow when the Bears visit Princeton for a pair of games.
