BERKELEY, Calif. – Senior Sam Grigo (Westbrook, Conn.) had three hits and the Brown baseball team outhit California by a 10-4 margin, but the Bears fell on the road, 7-6, in the four-game series finale Sunday afternoon at Evans Diamond.
Brown moved to 3-5 on the young season, while Cal improved to 11-4 overall.
Grigo went 3-for-4 at the plate to pace the Brown offense, adding a pair of RBIs, while rookie Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) posted two hits and scored one run.
Will Tomlinson (Irvine, Calif.) allowed three earned runs in three innings as the starter, before handing the ball to Dante Bosnic (Lutz, Fla.), who held the Golden Bears to one run over 3.1 innings of work. JJ Sliepka (Houston, Texas) took the loss with two earned runs over 1.1 innings of work. Zayne Patino earned the win for Cal out of the bullpen.
Jake Rosander (Fullerton, Calif.) gave the Bears an early lead when he hit a two-run single through the left side in the top of the second. Cal responded with one run in the bottom half, but Brown came right back in the top of the third as Louis Gaitley (San Francisco, Calif.) scored on a throwing error.
Brown's offense continued to score with two runs on two hits in the fourth, as Grigo knocked home Lomuscio and Rosander with a two-out single through the left side. Cal answered back in the bottom half with three unearned runs to trim the lead to 5-4.
After Cal tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, Brown regained the lead in the eighth when Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) crossed the plate on the fielder's choice. California came up with two runs in the bottom half, however, as Tyrus Greene hit a two-run homer to move the home side in front by one run. Tanner Dodson used three strikeouts in the ninth to earn the save and secure the win.
Brown will visit Dallas Baptist for a three-game series next weekend.
