• Brown Bear Insider: Team USA Members Carroll and Dann Recap the 2011 World Championships

    Just because the 2010-2011 collegiate season is over, that does not mean that Brown student-athletes are not competing at a high level. Leigh Carroll and Ben Dann took their talents away from the Marston Boathouse this summer and accrued some impressive accomplishments at the 2011 U23 World Championships, while representing the United States. Each took a moment to relive their experiences and give an in-depth look at going up against some of the toughest competition in the world.
  • Leigh Carroll and Ben Dann Turn In Strong Performances At U-23 World Rowing Championship

    Brown University was well represented at the Under-23 World Championships in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, with Leigh Carroll ‘12 earning a bronze medal for the United States women’s eight and Ben Dann ‘12 placing 11th in the men’s single competition.
  • Brown Rowers Ben Dann '12 and Leigh Carroll '12 to Represent USA at World Championships

    Rower Ben Dann '12 and coxswain Leigh Carroll '12, both members of the Brown men's crew, will represent the United States at the U23 World Championships in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on July 21-24. Dann won the U23 men's single trial and finals at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. Carroll was selected by US Rowing as the coxswain for the Women's Eight at the World Championships.
  • Brown Men’s Crew Places Fifth Overall at 2011 IRA National Championships

    At the 2011 Intercollegiate Racing Association (IRA) National Championships on the Cooper River, Brown Men's Crew earned 142 team points, good for a fifth-place finish overall. The varsity eight boat fought to a fifth place finish in the grand finals, edging out Ivy League-rival Princeton, while the varsity four boat secured a silver medal with a late push in the second 1,000 meters in the grand final event.

    Battling severe winds, which actually forced race officials to reorder the lanes for the varsity eight semifinal heats, Brown men’s crew advanced three boats to tomorrow morning’s grand final and two more to the petite final, as the bears remain in contention for a 2011 IRA National Championship.
  • Brown Men’s Crew Prepares for 2011 IRA Regatta

    Brown men’s crew has made the trek down to the Cooper River for the 2011 Intercollegiate Racing Association (IRA) Regatta, the collegiate championship for the men’s heavyweight division. The Bears, which are ranked sixth in the latest coaches poll, look to follow in the footsteps of their female counterparts, and go from the six position in the standings to national champs.
  • Varsity Four Speeds Ahead of the Pack as Bears Advance Four Boats to IRA Semis

    Facing a grueling opening slate, the Bears powered their way to impressive finishes on the first day of competition at the 2011 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Regatta. The Brown varsity four boat showed off the fastest speed of the day, winning by over three lengths, while Bruno’s varsity eight and second varsity both placed second against National No. 1 seed Washington and advanced to tomorrow morning's semifinals. The Bears' freshman boat took the long way to the semis, winning the repechage this afternoon.

    Brown men’s crew is primed for the Eastern Sprints and will look to advance to the grand final and knock off the favorite in undefeated Harvard. Earlier this season, the Bears were narrowly edged by the Crimson, falling by less than length.
  • Brown Men’s Crew Finishes Fourth at EARC Sprints

    At the 2011 EARC Sprints, Brown Men’s Crew fought its way to a fourth-place finish, trailing only Wisconsin and Ivy League Rivals, Princeton and champion Harvard. In a highly contested grand final of the varsity eight, all four teams put fourth impressive times, while the Bears finished fourth, just over three seconds off the pace.
  • Princeton Edges Brown’s V8; Bears 3V8 Wins Big

    Brown traveled to Princeton on Saturday afternoon and despite some very close races, the day proved to the Tigers overall. The Bears’ third varsity was victorious by more than 13 seconds but, the varsity eight, second varsity and freshmen boats were all edged by Princeton.
  • Bears Win Four Night Races at Dartmouth

    It may be springtime but Mother Nature is still affecting numerous sporting events in the northeast. Brown men’s crew was forced to race a day earlier than anticipated, going off in the early evening as snow fall in Hanover on Saturday prevented any racing. The Bears were unaffected by the sudden time change and won all four races against the Big Green.
  • Brown Sprints Past Northeastern in Final Home Meet

    Brown men’s crew showed off its speed on Saturday as the varsity eight won its sixth-straight Dreissigacker Cup against Northeastern. Brown’s JV8, which also raced against NU’s varsity, also finished ahead of the Huskies.
  • Brown Men’s Crew Falls at Harvard

    Ivy League rival Harvard captured all five races from Brown, reclaiming the Stein Cup Saturday morning on the Charles River. Brown was the only team to hand the Crimson a varsity dual loss of last season.
  • No. 5 Brown Men’s JV8 Edges No. 12 BU

    Despite some tough racing weather conditions, No. 5 Brown men’s crew headed up to the Charles Rive to take on No. 12 Boston University. Bruno saw its JV8 boat edge BU by 1.2 seconds, but its Varsity eight and Freshman 8 boats came up just short.

    Brown men’s crew opened its 2011 Spring season at home on the Seekonk River on Saturday afternoon, taking on Ivy League rival Yale. The Bears’ varsity 8 and freshmen 8 boats were both victorious.

    Brown University Athletics is proud to honor the seven deserving members of the Hall of Fame class of 2011. The 38th annual ceremony will take place on Saturday, April 2, at the Westin Hotel in Providence with festivities kicking off at 6 p.m. This year’s inductee list includes Igor Boraska ’95 (Men’s Crew).

    In the final meet of 2010, the Brown men’s crew varsity four took sixth overall with a time 13:09.232. The only schools to finish ahead of the Bears were Harvard (three boats), Syracuse and Boston University.

  • Brown Crew Victorious Versus Cornell Prior To Head of Charles

    Brown men’s crew traveled to Rochester, N.Y. for the Head of the Genesee Regatta where three Bear boats faced three Cornell crews in the open eight race. Both teams raced the course at about 33 strokes per minute and in a close race the Brown eight was able to pull out in the straightaways and held on during the turns for a three second victory over the Big Red.
  • Brown Crew Wins Novice 8 at Housatonic

    The men’s freshmen crew raced this past weekend in Shelton, Conn., at the Head of the Housatonic and won their event, the men's collegiate novice eight.
