Stetson Outlasts Brown, 17-13

DeLand, Fla. – With temperatures hovering around 90-degrees and a feel-like temperature of 100 at kick-off, Stetson earned its first win of the season with a 17-13 win over Brown Saturday afternoon at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium.

The Bears are now 2-2 overall, while Stetson improves to 1-5.

Trailing 17-7 in the fourth quarter freshman Jeffrey Jonke (Lucas, TX) took over at quarterback for the Bears and drove 75 yards in nine plays for a touchdown, with freshman Darius Daies (St. Louis, MO) scoring on a 12-yard run to trail, 17-13, with 8:55 remaining in the game. The missed extra point kept it a four-point advantage for the Hatters.

The Bears had the game's final possession and advanced to the Stetson 29-yard line, but were unable to get into the end zone as time expired.

Brown senior quarterback Thomas Linta (Branford, CT) played the first three quarters, completing 14-of-21 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown. Jonke, making his collegiate debut, came on in a relief role and threw for 71 yards, completing 5-of-13 passes.

Daies and senior David Moodie (Sanford, FL) combined to rush for 102 yards, with Daies running for 59 yards and a touchdown and Moodie rushing for 43 yards.

Stetson quarterback Colin McGovern threw for 269 yards, completing 26-of-36 passes, and ran for another 28 yards, including two touchdowns. Jeb Bourdeaux and Eric Martin made 10 tackles each for the Hatters.

Both teams missed field goal tries in the opening 10 minutes, but Stetson got on the scoreboard first, capitalizing on an interception.  Johnny Messina booted a 32-yard field goal with 28 seconds left in the opening quarter for a 3-0 Hatters lead.

Brown answered by driving 72 yards in five plays to take a 7-3 lead, capped off by a seven-yard touchdown pass from Linta to sophomore Demitri Jackson (Nashua, NH) early in the second quarter.  The big play in the drive was a 40-yard pass play from Linta to sophomore Jaelon Blandburg (Orange County, CA).

Stetson grabbed a 10-3 lead with 2:37 left in the half on a seven-yard touchdown run by McGovern.

The Hatters extended their lead to 17-7 on another McGovern touchdown run, this time on an eight-yard touchdown scamper with 1:56 left in the third quarter.  Overall, Stetson held the ball for 12:57 of the third quarter's 15 minutes.
