NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior forward Erika Steeves posted a double-double on 18 points and 13 rebounds, but Brown University women's basketball fell at Yale University, 77-63, in both teams' Ivy League opener on Friday afternoon at the John J. Lee Amphitheater.
The Bears (12-2, 0-1 Ivy) tied the game at 58-58 with 6:54 to play, but the host Bulldogs (8-6, 1-0 Ivy) responded with a 10-0 run to gain a 68-58 lead with 2:40 remaining.
Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) notched her fourth double-double of the season and the 13th of her career. She hit 6-of-12 shots from the floor, 2-of-4 shots from 3-point distance, and 4-of-4 free throws.
Sophomore guard Justine Gaziano (Natick, Mass.) tallied 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting and six rebounds, and junior guard Shayna Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) totaled 12 points, five assists, and four rebounds.
Junior forward Mary Butler (Bangor, Maine) netted a season-high 12 points for her first game in double figures this season alongside six boards while senior forward Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.) finished with eight points, four boards, three blocks, and three steals.
The Bulldogs held the Bears to a season-low 63 points and 17.2-percent (5-of-29) shooting from 3-point distance. Yale led Brown 17-6 in points off turnovers and made 8-of-12 shots in the fourth quarter.
The Bears opened the game with a 13-9 lead at the 4:33 mark of the first quarter behind a top-of-the-key 3-pointer from Steeves, pull-up jumper from Mehta, and six points from Gaziano. A second-chance basket from Gaziano kept Brown up 17-16 before Yale gained a 20-17 edge at the end of the first frame.
The Bulldogs capped an 8-0 run to pull ahead 24-17 inside of the first minute of the second quarter. Jump shots from Steeves, Butler, and Mehta brought Brown back within 25-23 with 6:04 left in the stanza. After Yale pulled ahead 33-25, Mehta and Butler each connected on 3-pointers in the final 2:16 of the half to trim the Bears' deficit to 37-31 at the break.
The Bears scored the first eight points of the third quarter and completed an 11-0 run on a conventional 3-point play from Mehta to grab a 39-37 edge at the 8:24 mark. A step-back 3-pointer from Gaziano kept the Bears up 46-44 with 5:14 to go in the frame before the hosts took a 52-48 edge at the end of the quarter.
Brown tied the game at 58-58 with 6:54 remaining behind baskets from Butler, Steeves, White, and Mehta, but Yale responded with a 10-0 run to gain a 68-58 advantage with 2:40 to play. A 3-point play from Butler cut it to 68-61 before the Bulldogs scored 9 of the game's final 11 points.
For Yale, Jen Berkowitz posted 20 points and nine rebounds, Roxy Barahman tallied 17 points and six assists, and Tamara Simpson compiled 15 points and eight steals. Megan Gorman added 11 rebounds, and Ellen Margaret Andrews chipped in 12 points.
Next, Brown hosts Yale on Friday, Jan. 19 at 5:30 p.m. in a game set for broadcast on myRITV, the Ivy League Network, and WPRV-AM 790.
Brown fell to 45-41 all-time vs. Yale and to 16-26 in road games vs. the Bulldogs … Shayna Mehta now has 1,058 career points moving into 15th place on Brown's all-time list and passing Shelly Weaver '93. She has now scored in double figures 55 times in her career … Mary Butler scored in double figures for the fourth time in her career … Justine Gaziano scored in double figures for the 33rd time in her career … Erika Steeves grabbed double-digit rebounds for the 16th time in her career and scored in double figures for the 38th time … Janie White now has 171 career blocks, tied for 12th all-time in Ivy League history.
