Women’s Lacrosse Edged by No. 14/16 Princeton, 12-10

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's lacrosse team was edged by No. 14/16 Princeton, 12-10, to open the Ivy League slate on Saturday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field. After trailing by three going into halftime, the Bears scored six-straight goals to open the second to take a 9-6 lead, but Princeton would retaliate by also scoring six-consecutive tallies and eventually take the win.

Princeton (3-1, 1-0 Ivy League) opened the first half with four-straight scores which included two from Kyla Sears 10 minutes into the period. Freshman Risa Mosenthal (Campton, N.H.) halted the Tigers' run with her 14th of the year on a free-position shot at 18:03 while sophomore Emma DeGennaro (Huntington, N.Y.) pulled Brown (2-2, 0-1 Ivy League) within two (4-2) with another free-position score at 15:07.

Sears tallied her third of the day at 10:46 and Camille Sullivan scored at 7:31 to push Princeton to a 6-2 advantage. Junior Caroline Zaffino (Darien, Conn.) scored at 5:52 to cut the Tigers' lead in half to enter the break down three (6-3). Shots were even for both teams in the first, 16-16, while Brown held the draw control advantage at 7-3. Each team had just one failed clear with Brown 8-for-9 in the period and Princeton 11-for-12.

The Bears came out of the break firing and scored six straight to claim a 9-6 lead at 19:54 with junior Hafsa Moinuddin's (Cheshire, Conn.) goal. Senior Carolyn Paletta (Greenwich, Conn.) started the run soon into the stanza at 29:39. Mosenthal closely followed with her second on the day at 28:49. Zaffino (23:35), Paletta (22:42) and freshman Maggie Fowler (Bethesda, Md.) (22:01) followed with Moinuddin closing the run with her score.

Sullivan started Princeton's run at 18:35 and Sears later tied the contest at nine with her tally at 17:01. Annie Cory gave the Tigers a one-goal lead at 14:28 and Sears added two more for a three score cushion (12-9) at 7:14 on a free-position goal. The Tigers held the Bears without a score until 53 second remained in the game when Mosenthal scored her third. Princeton would run out the clock after winning the draw control following Mosenthal's tally.

With three goals on the day, Mosenthal now has at least a hat trick in her first four career games. Zaffino and Paletta also finished the contest with multiple goals, each having two. Fowler and DeGennaro added a goal and assist apiece.

Sophomore Maggie Bigelow (Montclair, N.J.) tied her season high with eight saves in goal while Mary McDonough came up with 10 stops in the Princeton net.

Both teams finished with three free-position goals, with Brown 3-for-8 and Princeton 3-for-7. Each team was successful in large part on clears with the Bears 17-for-20 while the Tigers were 22-for-24. Brown dominated draw controls, doubling up on Princeton 16-8 overall. On the day, the Bears outshot the Tigers, 34-28.

Brown will next compete for the Ocean State Cup at Bryant on Wednesday, March 7 in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
