Softball Closes out Florida Atlantic Tournament against Rutgers

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Sophomore Sofia Venegas went 2-for-3, but Brown University softball fell to Rutgers University, 7-0, to close out its five-game stint at the Florida Atlantic University Tournament on Sunday morning at FAU Stadium.

The Scarlet Knights (4-15) scored four times in the bottom of the second and three times in the last of the sixth to defeat the Bears (0-10).

Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) posted her first multi-hit effort of the season while senior Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) hit a double.

Senior Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas), junior Grayson Metzger (Severna Park, Md.), sophomore Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.), and freshman Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) notched one hit apiece. 

In the circle, junior Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing seven runs, four earned, on six hits with two strikeouts in the loss (0-4). Sophomore Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) did not permit a hit with a strikeout in 0.2 innings of relief.

Shayla Sweeney tossed a complete game for Rutgers, giving up seven hits with a strikeout in the shutout win (4-3). Hailey Hoklotubbe went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Bridget Carr knocked in two runs, and Sierra Maddox scored twice.

Brown threatened in the top of the first as Okimoto singled with one out and advanced to third base with two down before the inning concluded.

The Scarlet Knights brought four runs home in the bottom of the second beginning with a two-run double from Carr. Rutgers scratched across another two runs on a bunt and a sacrifice fly.

Rutgers added three runs in the bottom of the sixth, including on an RBI single from Maddox.

Next, Brown plays at the Seton Hall Tournament from Mar. 17-19 with the Bears opening competition on Friday, Mar. 17 against Saint Peter's (10:00 a.m.) and Seton Hall (12:30 p.m.).
