PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In a match that saw two sets go to extra points and a third frame go to the maximum in regulation, Brown University volleyball dropped a 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-23, 26-24) decision to Cornell University on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears (5-10, 0-4 Ivy) took the first set in overtime and pushed the third set to the brink in regulation before falling to the visiting Big Red (6-7, 2-2 Ivy) in extra points in the final frame.
Senior Shirin Tooloee (San Jose, Calif.) totaled eight kills, 13 digs, and three aces while junior Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and sophomore Makena Ehlert (Orange County, Calif.) each tallied eight kills. Junior Courtney Palm (St. Louis, Mo.) registered a match-best seven blocks.
In the back row, freshman Joanne Won (Newport Beach, Calif.) posted a team-high 14 digs, and senior libero Melissa Cairo (Hillsborough, Calif.) notched 12 digs and four aces. Junior Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) contributed 17 assists and nine digs, and freshman Bailie Salk (Tiburon, Calif.) added 12 assists.
The first set witnessed 17 ties and seven lead changes as Brown emerged with a 26-24 win. With the stanza knotted at 20-20, the two teams combined for another four ties, and Brown won the frame with a 3-1 spurt to close the set. Tooloee paced Brown with six digs in the period.
Cornell gained a 17-9 lead midway through set two before Brown charted five straight points to pull within 17-14. The Bears remained within 20-17 before the Big Red finished the set with a 5-1 run. Still terminated on four kills in the frame.
Trailing 14-11 in set three, the hosts used a 5-2 streak to tie the score at 16-16. Facing a 20-17 deficit later in the frame, Brown notched five unanswered points to pull ahead 22-20. The visitors responded with a 5-1 streak to win the set, 25-23, and take a 2-1 set lead.
Brown held leads of 9-5 and 15-10 early in set four prior to Cornell using a 6-0 run to claim an 18-17 edge. The Bears went back ahead 21-18, but the Big Red countered with another 6-0 spurt to stake itself to a 24-21 advantage. The Bears rallied to tie the set at 24-24 before the visitors won the last two points to earn a 26-24 win. Ehlert and Won posted five kills and six digs respectively in the period.
For Cornell, Jenna Phelps recorded match highs with 12 kills and seven aces, Chelsea Sincox dished out a match-best 22 assists, and Kiley McPeek led the match with 22 digs.
Next, Brown hosts Columbia tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 7, at 6:00 p.m.
