Women's Water Polo Opens CWPA Play with No. 7 Michigan, No. 10 Princeton

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Brown University women's water polo pushed No. 10 Princeton University in an 11-8 setback after falling to No. 7 University of Michigan, 16-2, in its CWPA opening weekend at Hartwick College's Moyer Pool on Saturday.

In the their first Collegiate Water Polo Association games of the season, the Bears (16-5, 0-2 CWPA) held a 5-4 lead in the third quarter before falling to the Tigers (20-3, 5-1 CWPA) in the nightcap after dropping a decision to the Wolverines (23-8, 6-0 CWPA) in their CWPA opener.

Between the two games, junior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) and sophomore McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) each netted four goals. Junior goalkeeper Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) made 21 saves on the day.

Next, Brown continues CWPA play at Hartwick tomorrow, Sunday, Apr. 9, with games against Bucknell at 10:30 a.m. and George Washington at 1:30 p.m.

Game 1 – No. 7 Michigan 16, Brown 2

Junior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) and sophomore McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) each scored one goal, but Brown fell to No. 7 Michigan, 16-2, in its CWPA opener on Saturday afternoon.

On the defensive end, junior goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) blocked 15 shots while sophomore Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) compiled a team-high three steals.

In their first game of the day, the Bears trailed the Wolverines 9-1 at halftime and 14-1 through three quarters.

Brown remained within 3-0 of Michigan after the first quarter, and a goal from Heilman made the score 6-1 midway through the second quarter. The Wolverines closed the half on a 3-0 run to take a 9-1 lead at the break.

Michigan scored the first seven goals of the second half to extend its edge to 16-1 before Miller netted a goal inside of the final 10 seconds.

Game 2 – No. 10 Princeton 11, Brown 8

Junior Jessica Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) and sophomore McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) each netted three goals, but Brown dropped an 11-8 decision to No. 10 Princeton in its second game of the day on Saturday night.

With the two teams tied at 4-4 at the start of the second half, the Bears went ahead 5-4 in the third quarter before the Tigers took an 8-6 lead at the end of the stanza and held on for the win.

Competing in their first game of the season against an Ivy League opponent, Heilman and Miller each posted a hat trick. Senior Marisa Kolokotronis (Sacramento, Calif.) and sophomore Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) tallied one goal apiece.

Junior net-minder Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) repelled six shots while Kolokotronis and Miller logged three and two steals respectively.

After Princeton took a 1-0 lead, Heilman and Miller scored back-to-back goals to push Brown ahead 2-1. Miller gave the Bears a 3-2 lead later in the first quarter before the Tigers knotted the score at 3-3 heading to the second quarter.

Princeton scored 40 seconds into the second quarter before Kolokotronis found the back of the net with 1:01 to go until halftime to equalize at 4-4 at the intermission.

Heilman scored at the 4:56 mark of the third quarter to give Brown a 5-4 advantage before Princeton scored four straight goals to gain an 8-5 edge. Another goal from Heilman kept Brown within 8-6 through three quarters.

The Tigers moved ahead 10-6 before Miller cut the margin to 10-7. After Princeton gained an 11-7 lead, Woo scored the game's last goal with two seconds left.
